"Social" Media- Is It Really Making Us Social?

When you think of social media what do you think about? Facebook, Instagram. Snap Chat? Many people have social media. It helps keeps us connected to our friends and families. Looking at someone’s social media can say a lot about that person. It can have where they are from, how old they are, what their interests are, and even what they are doing at that very second. But is social media really social? I have given this a lot of thought and I cannot come up with a yes or no answer. Is it social or is it taking social experiences away from us?

We use social media every day. I use social media probably way more than I should. Every night before I go to bed I look at all my social medias and as soon as I wake up I do the same thing. When I am scrolling through witter and Instagram I tend to block the whole world around me out. I am so focused in my social media that I sometimes can be clueless of what is going on beyond my phone. We are so caught up by likes that we don't see what the big picture really is.

Think about your snap chat. Snap chat has a feature called "my story" this lets you post pictures on snap chat for everyone to see. Now, I am not sure if this is just me but I HATE when people got to concerts and literally record the whole concert and put it on their snap story. If I wanted to see the concert I would have bought a ticket. When you are at the concert the best part is dancing and screaming along with the lyrics. Being in that moment is truly amazing.

Social media does us keep connected to our friends and family. Personally being at college I use social media to stay connected with my home friends. I can't always get to go home and even when I am home they might not of came home the same weekend. It is so hard to keep in contact with someone when they are so far away. My grandmother lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, she loves to see what I am doing and how I am doing and it is just so much easier for her to be on Facebook and read what I post. Being on the go all the time makes it hard to call every person that it is important to me and update them on what is going on with my life. It is just easier to make a post and tag all of them. Am I wrong for that?

I think that social media is always going to be up for debate. Is it helping us or hurting us? What do you guys think?
