Cyber bullying
Cyber bullying is a large issue with today's youth. Many people
are not educated on how this issue is effecting students around America every
day. Here are 11 facts about Cyber Bullying according to Dosomething.org.
1. Nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online. One in four have had it happen more than once.
Almost half the kids that attend school have been bullied online. Can you imagine how this makes them feel? This is why I truly believe that students should not have phones until they are responsible enough to use them wisely. How hard is it to find that age? Many young adults in their 20’s still use their phones to bully.
2. 70% of students report seeing frequent bullying online.
So, what could we do to help this? Dosomething.org suggest posting positive things to outshine the bad things posted.
3. Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly, making it the most common medium for cyber bullying.
This is not only teens! I have seen elementary students with cell phones! How do we determine how old people should be when they get their first cell phone? How old should they be to sign up for a social media page?
4. 68% of teens agree that cyber bullying is a serious problem.
They know its a problem and adults know its a problem, so what are we doing to help?
5. 81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person.
This is so true. If you bully at school then you can get into trouble but if you do online you have no one to answer to. Again, this is not just teens. Adults are saying things online that they would NEVER say to a person face-to-face.
6. 90% of teens who have seen social-media bullying say that have ignored it.
There is a lot of people that are not cyber bullying that see it happening and laugh. It's funny until it's actually happening to you.
7. Only one in ten victims will inform a parent or trusted adult of their abuse.
These victims are scared. They think if they tell, nothing will be done and it will get worse. This is why we need to be supportive and talk to the youth about what they are experiencing.
8. Girls are about twice as likely as boys to be victims and perpetrators of cyber bullying.
Girls need to learn that we need to be building each other up rather than tearing each other down.
9. About 58% of kids admit someone has said mean or hurtful things to them online. More than four out of ten say it has happened more than one.
This is only the percentage of kids that would come forward as victims of cyber bullying.
10. Bullying victims are two to nine times more likely to consider committing suicide.
This is very scary. We all know it’s happening but are unwillingly to be the solution.
11. About 75% of students admit they have visited a website bashing another student.
AGAIN, it is funny until it's happening to you.
I think that something I have always noticed is that when bullies are approached, they dont really realise how awful they are being. Like you have said, it seems to always be in humor and not for personal gain. I think that this fact should be addressed more in lower education.
ReplyDeleteI learned how aweful the cyber bulling is in elementary, and I was aware to be careful about it. The cyber bullying exist from long time, but it has not yet solved, and from your blog, I understood that there are still many people are suffering by the cyber bullying. I think there should be more campaigns to announce about the cyber bullying, and I think it is college students' responsibility to move on.
ReplyDeleteWow these statistics are startling. I think that we are all aware that cyber bullying occurs, but the fact that this large amount of kids have gone through this. It is so sad that this many kids feel the need to hurt and make other kids feel bad about themselves. We need to be able to monitor kids better and social media does as well.
