Throw What You Know- GO GREEK
When I was a sophomore in high school my older sister,
Ashly, was a freshman at Baldwin Wallace University. She came home one weekend
and told me how excited she was to go through sorority recruitment. Of course,
being the younger sister, it was my duty to make fun of her. I made jokes for
hours about all the silly stereotypes I knew about Greek life. I never thought,
in just three short years, I would be a part of Greek life myself.
My sister ended up taking a bid from Delta Zeta. As soon as
I told her I was going to Ohio Northern, she informed me that they also had a
Delta Zeta chapter. At first, I told her that I would look into Delta Zeta and
see what it had to offer. In the back of my mind I was thinking, "there is
no way I am going to join a sorority".
Well, as promised, I looked into it. I went to recruitment
events and signed up for formal recruitment. At that point, I still was not
totally convinced I was going to join.
I went to the first formal round of recruitment to meet
girls from all of the sorority chapters at Ohio Northern. I had such a great
time talking to the girls and connecting with them. These girls were just like
me. That night I went back to my dorm room and called my sister to tell her all
about it. I told her about the girls I met and how I was excited to go back the
next day. She, of course, asked me more about the girl from Delta Zeta. I told
her that I liked her a lot but I was going to stay neutral and try to find the
best fit for me. I also informed her that if I got a bid from a sorority, I
would accept it.
I went to the next two rounds of recruitment and was very
nervous about whether or not I was going to get a bid. Sunday morning I got a
knock on my door and was informed that I got a bid from Delta Zeta. I was so
happy that I accepted the bid right away. The knock was also to inform me that
I needed to get ready to meet my new sisters soon.
Woah! I was nervous again. Now, I had to meet almost 60 new
girls and try to get them to like me. I later learned that I shouldn't of been
nervous at all. They were so welcoming and truly made me feel at home. I never
in my life felt more accepted.
Fast forward to my fourth year in Delta Zeta. I still love
my sorority as much as I did then. I am so grateful that I went through with
recruitment. I will never be more thankful for the opportunities Delta Zeta has
given me.
My advice for anyone
interested in Greek life would be to just try it out! Go to recruitment events
and see if it fits you. You never know what you may be missing out on. I
absolutely believe that joining a sorority was one of my best decisions in
college.
Unfortunately, exchange students cannot join a sorority, but I guess you're having a wonderful time there! And, that's something you cannot see in Japan. There is no fraternity and sorority in Japan. Therefore, when I see girls who are in a sorority, it's like a scene from a movie or drama! Enjoy your time there :)
